location matters, different places have different values and thus kids see a different side of things... i feel like where i live now people worry about hassling people over stupid shit, but i grew up in appleton, WI., and even 15-20 years ago when i was preteen/teening it up it was different there, i was unpopular, but there that just meant i got left out of the loop, and there were still groups of kids who purposely hung out with the odd kids, gay kids were just as likely to popular, the popular kids tended to make a point of hanging out the mentally handicapped kids (i went to the newest of the cities schools so i think because we had the uptodate facilities a large portion of the cities special ed kids where there) and none of this shit where kids record each other fighting and it gets on the news (like happens here) happened there.
