I think the reason it's outrageous is because before the character was canonically gay, it was a joke that he totally acted the stereotype of a gay person despite (presumably) being straight. But now that they've come out and said he is indeed a gay man, then the stereotype becomes less of a joke and more of the reality about how people will picture the 'token gay' character.
At least that's the outrage I've seen coming from the lgbt+ community.

I think those are geckos and their tails come off pretty easily so it's not a matter of letting go it's a matter of their tail being ripped from their body.
