Dog meat will be banned at annual chinese festival 26 comments

The thing is they sometimes torture the poor dogs before they kill them, due to the belief that the adrenaline will make them taste better (it doesn't). Even with cows and chickens, I would want them to be treated humanely.

If you're actually stranded on a desert island, the international distress symbol is a triangle. Much easier to make than the word "help."

Which one is it? ;) 35 comments

It's the equation that's at fault. It should be written:
6
---------=1
2(1+2)
or
6
---(1+2)=9

The division symbol leads to ambiguity, and while it's fine for teaching beginning math, it shouldn't be used in an equation like this.

Fun fact: our Western idea of "perfect" is heavily based off the Greek belief that perfection is static, like a statue. However the Jewish idea of "perfect" is that perfection can be dynamic, like a garden. Something can change and still be perfect, so if God has a plan and then we pray to change that plan and God complies, that doesn't mean He's imperfect.

I didn't say GMOs are harmful, only that GMOs are different than selective breeding.

While that's technically correct, it's not what people mean when they say GMO. It's like, if someone said "don't eat those cherries someone sprayed chemicals on them" you wouldn't respond by saying "everything is a chemical! The cherries are fine!" You implicitly understand they mean harmful chemicals. Similarly, when someone says GMO they refer only to organisms that have been genetically engineered, which is different from selective breeding.
Who the f*ck calls them "cheese pulls" like wtf 13 comments

I think what they meant was "the act of pulling melted cheese into a long gooey thread is so satisfying" and they just used mozzarella sticks for demonstration. They could have used a grilled cheese.

My guess is that it's a beauty competition that excludes the face, so they cover it up so the judges aren't influenced.

There is a charity called LiNK (Liberty in North Korea) that helps refugees escape. It's not as dramatic as going to war, but every little bit helps.

When they are like this they are at their most docile and least likely to sting. They are gorged on honey and they have no hive to protect. They are just resting while they send out scouts to look for a place to build a hive.

I needed this. Because I'm not bilingual and didn't know. 34 comments

I was once lab partners with a bilingual girl. When she spoke on the phone to her bilingual relatives she might rattle off a conversation in Spanish, then get a a phrase like "graphing calculator" and switch to English, then reach another phrase and pop back over to Spanish. She could just flip flop without missing a beat.

I had heard it from my mom who heard it from my family pediatrician that it had mercury. Perhaps I am mistaken.

Mostly I'm concerned about mercury and aluminum, heavy metals that stay in the body for years. You get vaccines, you eat tuna, you drink bad tap water, and the heavy metals build up. It's not any one thing but several toxins you ingest throughout your life. I'd rather get mercury poisoning than polio, but I'd rather have neither. It's my old pediatrician who suggested a spaced out schedule. There's a safer way to do these things.

Actually, you should consider putting your child on a "spaced-out" schedule. Vaccines may not cause autism, but they're still full of toxins, and those can be hard on a little baby all at once. The anti-vaxxer movement has made it look like all criticism of vaccines is conspiracy theory nonsense.
