Ha ha yeah, that’s a great idea! Let’s say tomorrow all corporations stop dumping pollution into to environment and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Well you can forget about the five minute shower because now you are getting no water. You don’t have to worry about going vegan because even vegetables produce pollution in the form of fertilizer runoff. No cars, no electricity, no natural gas to heat your home. But it’s all corporations fault for producing the goods that you consume. “Why don’t they just make the same stuff but without pollution?” If they made less pollution, the cost of everything would increase and middle class people might be able to afford it, but the ones most effected would be the poor. What I hate most about this mentality is the way it conveniently passes the blame to faceless corporations thereby absolving oneself from the harm one is causing.

Marie Lu touches on this concept in her Legend series, and Scott Westerfield explores it in Extras. One interesting thing Westerfield thought up was groups of people purposely getting a low score to rebel against society. Also, every time real life starts to look like the dystopian novels I grew up with, my soul breaks a little.

Both sides need to grow up. I’ve been rejected by guys, I’ve rejected guys. If you like someone, tell them. If they don’t like you back, move on. But don’t complain about life if you’re not willing to put in a little bit of effort.

Actually, it is a lamp! We just never see it lit, so it might be confusing as to how it works for someone who doesn’t live in ancient times. It’s kind of funny that thousands of people only know the design of ancient lamps because of the Genie, like an accidentally preserved remnant of the past. Anyway, how it works is you would fill it with oil, then put a wick in the spout part. You would light the wick on fire, and it would draw oil until it was all burnt up. That design was used for thousands of years.

“And then, the Genie was Will Smith, but with blue CGI.”

And while we’re on the subject of books, read Red Scarf Girl by Ji-li Jiang if you want to learn more. It’s about a young girl growing up in Maoist China. I read it as a kid and thought it was very well done. It shows not only the suffering endured by the people of China, but their attitude toward him as well. The funny thing is, the protagonist never blamed him for the bad things that happened to her until she got older. Everyone would blame the police who beat and humiliated them, or dragged away family members, but not Mao.

This is actually a great idea! It’s a nice pick-me-up, a tasty snack, a reminder of how much your kid loves you, and a hint of placebo effect!
