Maybe it's because our nations have differing values. I don't know much about Germany, but Americans historically take pride in self-sufficiency, a strong and just military, and large events where people can rally around local symbols of strength.
That's why patriotic Americans don't want to be nannied by the state, why we choose to serve our military/government, and why we enjoy local events and sports.

America is not a land for people who want to be taken care of. It is a land where you can choose to carve out your destiny, to fail or succeed based off of your own choices and abilities.
