I do something similar with my guy best friend as well. He has a playlist called "sad boi hours" and if I notice he's listening to it on spotify (cause we follow each other) I'll send him a snapchat (we snapchat regularly throughout the day so it's not random) to see what hes up to. He can't really hide his emotions from me and I can usually tell if he's upset when he replies and I'll just drop a "you good? Always here if you need anything."

The social feature on spotify on desktop allows you to see what your friends are listening to when you are following them. It'll tell you the name of the song and what playlist they're listening to at that moment.
