I’ve been there. They tell you like it is. Slaves were not a cheap commodity. Not everyone owned them. I know from friends outside of the south that there are opinions that slaves were cheap and that a good deal of people owned them. Just like now, poor people outnumber the rich and only the rich or well to do people had them.
