They are largely English and French.
1. England, 15th c
2. and 3. England 13th-14th c
4. England (Peterborough?), Early 13th century
5. England, c 1185
6. late 13th, French
7. England (Salisbury?), c 1230-1240
8. France, c. 1450
The mandrake is North England or North France, c.1190-1200
And perhaps we are talking about a cone of volume ;) Some people, I guess translated Pliny the Elder's description in Natural History differently. I can find references to acres and "furlongs" (which is indeed distance)

Fun fact: they also poop out of their cloacas...And it is believed that dinosaurs mated in the same way.

You can't buy better than Prismacolor pencils! Drawing like this is pretty much impossible with any other brand

They say that after having kids, very little can gross you out. I imagine this is why...

I think that is what the argument is: that the practical effect here is better than CGI today. And I would agree!

I feel like the news/internet cycle has informed us more of all of this (re: poverty and suffering and disasters) so we feel all-the-more like the world is ending. I think this overload of info also contributes to apathy, unfortunately...

oh no! I'm so sorry! I hope you are feeling better. (slash I agree. I barely made it out--this last august--in one piece)

Bring it on! I'm saying, let's study *all* the history. And not just for a month at a time. Studying one culture or population does not need to be to the exclusion of others!

I don't know about this case, but this was an interesting/sad article I read the other day: https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2017/02/10/why-does-the-united-states-still-let-12-year-old-girls-get-married/?utm_term=.6f5b76ee62f9

I just think history would be even *more* interesting if we got to read about bad asses like this guy!

Cool, but it's just like any other polymer (bio-degradable or not): If it's too brittle, it will not do a whole lot of good. You will have to add plasticizers to them, and these are also very harmful to the environment (think phthalates--sometimes up to 50 wt%)

As someone who has worked on mosaic preservation on archaeological sites, this is in unreasonably good condition. Unfortunately there is not always money to do excavations before tearing up the ground to build infrastructure/subways!
