Not entirely. I could compose a list of identical parts in a MacBook pro for just around $900. A used car? It's a bit of a stretch. But it's not hard to find a Buell Blast for just about $1000. That gives you another $100 to put into your computer.
$1000 will buy you a fairly decent used car that is adequate for basic transportation. A "grocery getter" that will get you to work and probably last as long enough till upgrade time.
