Because if you go into politics, or want to go oversees, or disagree with the people in charge, they can legally take away your rights,and/or call you a terrorist and set up a crime or 'Accident' or simply drag you away. C'mon people, we all deserve privacy. In the US at least, it should be a given.
I agree, the second you give the government permission to bypass your rights to privacy, you can't undo it, and they will have access to every piece of info about you.
Why do people give a crap? Really i dont give a crap if they have all my online info on a random hard drive as long as it doesnt get stolen. You really arent giving away so much, its only if you become a threat (and they would need serious evidence) that they start monitoring what you say.
