you could have the file in the sub folders, but all of them are corrupted except for one.

Right click, check properties, find one that isn't just kilobytes and you've found it! Too more time making all those folders than it would to find the right one.

Search for the original hash, unless he has changed it. Then look for the greatest percenteage of match.

I like how the geeks are all over this for problem solving. What you need to do is download the project on a stick, and put hints to it's location in the subfolders. After deleting the original.
