Well, I've always been told that if someone hits on you, despite gender, you take it as a compliment, and don't freak out if you get hit on by someone of the same gender.
It's sort of out of respect I think. If someone brings a friend to dinner at your house and they say "I'm Jewish so I can't have pork" you would be fine with it and have that much more to bond over with them.
True equality isn't achieved until heterosexual is no longer the "default" and people aren't automatically assumed to be straight. And, in my case personally, I prefer to tell people right away so I don't lose friends later. I've met a few people and gotten close to them only to have them be homophobic/transphobic assholes, later.
If it matter, I don't categorize people as straight, gay, whatever due to lack of info. I don't even think of it as an equality thing, though. It's just that I was taught from a young age that to assume makes an ass out of you and me.

I didn't say all religious people do. I'm Christian myself. If you look above, I was saying that I've had people who were my friends and said this upon finding out I'm gay. I never even mentioned religious people.

I am a gay Christian and see no conflict between these. I cannot leave homosexuality behind as it is part of me. A biological part of me. It's like leaving my arm behind.
