I'm sorry "hash tag" annoys the hell out of me though

I always thought it was called simply "hash", when you make voicemail messages the robot voice always told me "press hash key when you are done, located under the nine".

I've never heard that. Always tells me to press the pound key...maybe the times are changing now.
