Isn't sign language a language by itself? Is there "American sign language"?

Actually, there are a lot of "sign languages" around the world, similar to how people from different countries speak different languages. Remember the fake sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial? Everyone who spoke sign language thought that he was signing a different language than what they knew. That's how the guy had gone on for so long without being caught.
