It's not the church saying anything it's most of the people in the church. (And there are non-religious people who say no gay marriage). I don't believe in homosexuality but it's still a constitutional right and should be allowed.
I think by "the church" they mean all churches, none of which should have any say in our laws. The official doctrines of many, like Catholicism, still are against marriage equality and non-heterosexuals themselves, but that shouldn't matter. We're not ruled by any religion in America. Or we should not be.
Why is this so difficult to understand? People actually think gay marriage is like a relationship between their dog or an adult with a child. That is ridiculous. Neither of those have two consenting adults, gay marriage is consensual.
It's saying gay marriage will make advocates for beastility and pedophilia want their own constitutional rights to what they do. Which I completely disagree with.
I have met people who say homosexuality is like bestiality and pedophilia. My whole family: grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, all except for siblings and parents say that. ( Which makes being a closet homosexual very difficult).
Actually I think its up to the states, the government doesn't care. A gay couple actually filed their taxes together after legally getting married in their state =]
You can only enjoy all the benefits that marriage brings heterosexual couples if your state is a "recognition state," of one that has no law discriminating against same sex couples. If you live in a majority of the United States, you file seperate state taxes. Check out the legality of it all here: https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/recognition-same-sex-gay-marriage-32294.html
Oh my bad. I heard of a recent story on Rachel Maddows show so I assumed thats how most states ran if they gave same sex couples the right to marry.
My apologies. But thank you for the link and the clarification =]
I would also like to point out that part of the govt does recognize gay rights being as the US military offers full benefits that the heterosexual couples receive. Also the DOMA project is allowing homo sexual couples to marry and receive their green cards. There's a lot we turn our backs to just to make it seem the world is still ignorant when in fact every day we are becoming more and more accepting with this issue which shouldn't even be considered an issue at all
But you still have the extremely hateful people trying to push against us as hard as they can. And you have people like Scott Lively calling for a "Revolution" against the LGBT community. He's responsible for the anti-gay laws in Russia, Uganda, and other places. He openly calls for our deaths, saying we pose a threat to children and society itself. He blames the holocaust on us and the fall of civilizations. He's spreading his hate to Ukraine, blaming Russia's invasion on us, too.
I want to say that incestuous couples can be consenting adults and also the government provides benefits to heterosexual couples because they have the ability to produce the next generation and therefore provide a future tax base (hence the benefits allow for less economic burdening and create a better and easier environment for raising children)
You do know that gay marriage helps the economy, right? And us not getting married doesn't make the birth rate any worse or better. We're not going to turn to people we aren't attracted to just because we can't marry the person we love.
If we were allowed to marry in all states, it would bring up tax revenue by an estimated $20-$40 million per year. NYC's economy raked in $259 million in it's first year of gay marriage due to marriage fees and wedding-related spending. It would also make filing taxes much easier for same-sex couples. My state didn't allow marriages, but did allow civil unions not that long ago. A friend of mine and her wife had to file out three tax forms more than a heterosexual married couple, because of complicated laws between the state and federal governments. These are just a few of the benefits.
My apologies. But thank you for the link and the clarification =]
