But: big pharma DOES manufacture illness to sell its wares and hyperactive children are enormously profitable; OCD HAS become a fashionable way to explain your quirks; no treatment for depression can work without the sufferer working hard to change their perspective. I know nothing about PTSD, so I won't comment. I have a couple of these diagnoses and the truth is not as clear cut as this apologetic makes it look.
The scans cost WAY too much money to do on every patient, and (from my experience) to be diagnosed with ADHD/ADD, the doctor has a very long, strenuous consultation with the patient in question before prescribing. However, i do not know about the others
"You immediately lost me at big pharma."
No kidding right? I love how she ended it with "I have a couple of these diagnoses" to try and give herself credibility.
@willfree - Hey I would just LOVE to hear what you have to say about autism.
I hate ranting but yes, depression can be self afflicted, but it can also be an actual disease that comes out of having damage to the brain, like a concussion. And once you do have depression, it's a little bit harder to get over than saying just get over it, people have it worse; note the sarcasm. People that are kind of upset that say they're depressed do need to get over it, because depression is a serious mental illness, just wanted to make that clear :)
The flipside to this is that a lot of people refuse to change themselves because they have a bona fide medical condition. If you had a broken arm you'd nurture it back to health. If you had cancer you'd fight. Regardless its accuracy - a diagnosis is no excuse to give up on yourself.
The thing about depression is it kinda makes you give up on yourself. It takes a lot to do anything, simple things become physically exhausting and its hard to over come that with no self worth to drive a recovery.
^^ no kidding. That's why ketamine infusions worked so well for me. They hit me with four treatments in the first eight days. Totally knocked me out of a depression that had lasted two years.
Plus the stuff feels fantastic!
This is the body part that literally makes us who we are but since it isn't visible we don't accept that people can have a different brain from ourselves and even illnesses in it. Some people even have problems getting trough the week because society are so ignorant towards these problems...
I have ADHD and I used to have depression. You don't need to get one of those scans to be diagnosed for them. I didn't get one because you could tell by the way I acted that I had/have them. ADHD is not made up and I don't like it when people say it is. I don't think they would be saying that if they had it. When I think about how I acted before medication and the way I act now, there is a HUGE difference. I pay better attention now than I did before and I'm not excessively hyper. I did take medication for my depression but it eventually got better and I no longer need it. I'm a lot happier now and my life has gotten better. :)
It does stink. Especially when you're in high school because they have all these expectations and without medication it's hard to stay focused and act appropriately.
I hate it when people say they have ADHD/ADD when they actually dont, or they refuse treatment, it is so annoying, because they then blame all their misbehaving on it (before you get mad, i am diagnosed and i do take the meds)
I hate when they do that too! It's not right and it makes me so mad! It's a serious mental illness and people who treat it like a joke and/or use it as an excuse are people I refuse to associate with.
Has any one heard of "selective mutism"? You know, being shy? No joke. I apparently would have had it when I was younger. I just read it in some mommy magazine, so I don't think it's being diagnosed that much
You can be shy and not have it. Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder in which a person who is normally capable of speech does not speak in specific situations or to specific people. Selective mutism usually co-exists with shyness or social anxiety. Children with selective mutism stay silent even when the consequences of their silence include shame, social ostracism or even punishment. It's nothing new. People just tend to perceive it as shyness or rudeness.
I have PTSD and I HATE it when people are like "no you're too young to have that. You haven't even fought in a war" No I have not fought in a war. But I was nearly murder 6 times before I was 5, by my deadly disturbed brother who like to torture animals as well. I hate when people assume they know a situation
You can get PTSD from anything. War isn't the only thing that can cause it. Witnessing a murder, almost being murdered (which I'm sorry you had to go through that terrible thing), being raped, car accident, really any near death experience, and other things. People who think war is the only thing that causes it is an uneducated swine.
War is the most looked as reason but there's numerous other ways you can get it. I have it from being in two really bad car accidents. I used to have a panic attack every time I got behind the wheel but I got over it with time and therapy. Although not everyone is so lucky.
PTSD was discovered due to survivors of the Vietnam war having maladjustment to returning to society. More recent combats have had a high rate. Survivors of domestic or child abuse, accidents and other traumas have now shown signs of it. It is usually treated as an anxiety-depression combo in meds combined with cognitive therapy.
This I can relate to. .. my step father tried to kill me 3 times and my mother did nothing to help me... all she said was that there are others in the world who had it worse... this may be true but this abuse happened to me... to me! People should never say this to anyone who is hurting.. because it happened to them..and this is very devistating to them!!!!
While I know ADD/ADHD are real, they are being OVER-DIAGNOSED, that's the issue. Not that people don't have it. Teachers are just too fucking lazy to do their job and too ignorant to realize that KIDS are KIDS.
Sadly teachers are not responsible for this part of a kids life. It is the too fucking lazy PARENTS that won't treat their child's actual diagnosis, or even look at why they are having problems sitting still, paying attention etc. Whether the treatment is medication, therapy, or a mixture of support systems it is STILL and has ALWAYS has been a PARENT'S JOB to treat their children's medical, psychological, and physical health. IN FACT it is illegal for a teacher to recommend medication, suggest a child has ADHD/ADD, or treat them any differently than how they would treat other students in their classrooms - you know segregation, it ended in Oct. 29, 1969. For a student to receive "special" treatment from the education system they must be found, by a team of individuals who know the student and has their best interests at heart, to have a disabling condition that significantly interferes with their success in the general education classroom setting. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT
I am a teacher who not only has a kid with ADHD but suffers from ADD myself. I had a parent that refused to treat my student and it completely turned our class upside down. That in turn interfered with the kids education. Every wasted class is taxpayers money. BUT the treatment is for the student to help THEIR academics. That is all the medicine is supposed to help with anything else is just an added bonus. Not giving kids the same opportunity to learn IS a form of abuse. Also, there are alternatives or added ways to treat it including biofeedback and cognitive education/ counseling.
Unless your a doctor, don't be impressed by these brain scans. You can scan a man and a women, a kid and an adult, someone fully rested and someone deprived of sleep, even someone doing math and someone listening to music, and in each case you would get different brain scans. There's a reason doctors go through years and years of study to even crack the surface of the workings of the human brain. These scans are worthless unless you know all the possible reasons behind them.
Ok I am not a doctor, so cannot diagnose or offer treatments but have a medical and scientific background. Brain scans are a good image to demonstrate activity in the brain by argument of where blood flow is, there too is activity. Which is what the magnetic resonance imaging can detect. They are especially effective at demonstrating mental illness or brain damage ailment areas of trouble by showing where blood flow is cut off or influxes to the brain. No it is not a diagnosis tool, but it does offer insight by viewing one of the processes that interacts with the brain. It is
I have ADHD and my parents won't buy me my medication, and I struggle really hard in school especially in English when I can't focus on what I'm reading
Do you realise telling someone they should'nt be so sad because lots of people have it worse is exactly the same as twlling someone to not be so happy because lots of people have it better?
I suffer from Clinical Depression, and my whole family has it as well, so I hate it when people say "Get over it", because depression is more than just feeling sad. You basically lose your will to live, and I've self-harmed before and contemplated suicide, but I'm fortunate to have loving family and friends, who all pitched together to help me escape the dark pit. People always go off at others for being sad, but I have yet to see someone being told off for being happy
if you don't suffer from o.c.d or depression shut up ! you are showing what an idiot you are ,why don't you read up on it ,from a qualified source , and you may learn something instead of showing your ignorance by making statements like you did .
While I'm not saying these things aren't real, the PTSD scan appears to be two different layers of the same scan. Likely a CT scan. Unfortunately it makes me quotation the validity of the entire post
This would be a lot easier to take seriously if jerks wouldn't self diagnose themselves for attention.
All that does is take credibility from people who actually suffer.
This is relly silly! Those pictures do not prove anything! To indicate that they show that ADHD is an illness is as wrong as to say that a TV show is inside a TV because we can see the show there. Or looking inside a TV, believe that the electric things going on shows us where the actors are... Totally failed arguments and a pure hoax!
I'm guessing the simple minds creating this shit doesn't know what it looks like learning something when you cannot focus on it. Or possibly how it feels to have something in your life that's problematic or painful that you do seemingly without control or without conscious effort. I bet this specimen of perfect mental health can't express the accurate feelings surrounding the traumatic event of being only 5 feet from a parent who pulled the trigger to paint the scene of their suicide and how for years after the trauma they can be tossed back into the feeling surround the event by the sound of a spiral notebook slapping on the countertop. The idea that every sound smell taste and image seen during the trauma is unconsciously etched without prejudice is beyond their capacity to understand and will never cause true panic to their soul. They cannot possibly understand the hope and optimism one is raped of when darkness settles due questions that will never be answered after this experience
Sounds, tastes, visions, or smells can be "etched" in the brain. There is no cure but there are treatments. PTSD should not ever go untreated. It can harm the sufferer and everyone they come in contact with.
Anyone who doesn't think these illnesses exist should try to walk in my shoes.. Just because one person doesn't have to deal with these issues, does not mean that others don't have to.. Sometimes the battles that someone is fighting on the inside, is something they may never show you. But it's there and its existence is very real for them..
I have ADHD.... I can assure you it's not made up! I STRUGGLED all through school, knowing something was wrong.I have an older sisters, and she also knew something wasn't right. It wasn't until I started medical assistant (on the job training), that I went to the Dr. BC my sister had been put on meds. So I tried one of hers at school. About 25 minutes later I went to the bathroom and cried my eyes out!!! I thought this is what it's like to be "normal"!? After that I got tested, didn't even have to finish the test. He knew an hour into, that I had/have severe ADHD! I here ppl all the time say they don't believe, if you walked in my shoes for a day you would never say that again!! Also I have to work TWICE as hard with or without the meds. Most take extra steps on everything and or backass back wards to get where were going!! But also I've taken IQ test, it was 135. That's five away from what "they" consider a genius!! Most ADAD/ADD are intelligent! :-)
I was on antipsychotics or neuroleptics, benzos and antidepressants for schizophrenia, borderline, depression and anxiety for 14 yrs up until six months ago. Meditation yoga and eating right changed my life! Actually Dr. Breggin the truths about psychiatry did!! You ahould all look into what ever your issue, i was in and out of mental hospitals half my life, im 28. If it can help me it can help anyone. I used to say o needed the meds i all actuality, they were killing me they were "lobotomizing" my frontal lobe, they gave me a neurological movement disorder, theres no cure. Schizophrenia can be cured, im proof.
Wow. I think this is amazing. If only they could prove this in the 1980's. Would've explained so much of what I suffered with when I was in school. I have depression, PTSD, Borderline, and more. Wow, someone finally proves what I've been trying to prove for centuries.
One on anxiety would also be very eye opening to some people. I have anxiety and I can tell you how many times I hear "there's nothing to be afraid of!" Or "what people think doesn't matter!"
Hi The fear i have about taking medication is that it won't stop others treating and thinking you don't matter, but it can may make you oblivious to the fact that they are. Which could be a good thing. It's maybe why some people drink at parties.
No kidding right? I love how she ended it with "I have a couple of these diagnoses" to try and give herself credibility.

Mental health is very fine line..
Get over Yrself trying to make Yrself sound tough and untouchable......
So shallow
I’m sitting here with anxiety what does my brain look like
I don’t go to therapy every week to be told I’m normal
