I don't want to seem like an insensitive bitch, but I don't think that's how it works. I myself am very anti-social and taciturn, but when someone asks me for help, I do my best to help them. Some people are normal when it comes to socializing but then rather spend their time watching TV than helping someone out, no matter how screwed the person is. I know a few people like that. I think that shy =/= unkind and that some people are just assholes who won't even appreciate your concern.

When I'm having a bad day, the number one thing to turn it around is someone being nice to me. So I agree.

Yup. I remember having such a rough day, only to realize we were out of milk. So I had to drive my cranky kids to the grocery store, and barely managed to retain my sanity. It meant so much to me when the person ahead of me gave me a big smile and offered to pay for the milk.
