i undertsand this, but taking it from someone with depression, i hate it when people dont treat me like a normal person, like they have to walk on eggshells around me

It is very hard to treat people normally when they have an emotional or mental illness. The other tough part, especially with depression, is that it's hard to take serious, the term gets used so carelessly. Someone who genuinely suffers from depression is rarely taken serious until they snap and others can see the physical manifestation of the illness
Yes, I have depression and no one noticed anything was wrong until finally someone saw the cuts and even after that I've been told to get over it and just be happy because I totally chose to be depressed!
i used to have depression, and also suicidal thoughts, but this was more than 20 years ago, i can't explain what happened, but i identified within myself what was wrong and i haven't had it since. but if you yourself do, seek some professional help

Same! I've been suffering with depression for over 19 years now but all the cutting and suicidal thoughts have diminished so much. Seeking help saved my life.
Or like telling someone with Alzheimers or Dementia to "stop forgetting".
So many people don't seem to get that true mental illness, it's a problem with the brain, an actual chemical imbalance. It's not just caused by the individual, or directly from "things" or "situations" making you sad so just "cheer up".
To quote Hyperbole and a Half, "thinking yourself out of depression is like trying to punch yourself until your arms grow back. A fundimental part is missing and it isn't going to work."
I agree with this wholly but it reminded me of something that happened to be before:
I was doing wrestling practice when my coach made me wrestle with a guy who weighed 20 pounds more than me. It ended up with me breaking my toe. However, when I asked to sit out for the duration of practice, my coach did not believe that I was hurt and made me run for five minutes. After practice, My parents called me to say that I had to bike home because they were busy, and so I did. You guys should have seen the face my coach made when he saw my cast the next day.
Exactly! But what do you do when someone who *is* depressed tries to one up your own depression? Like, I wanna help but.. I hurt too... Maybe I'm just too nice a person? :p

No matter how serious the illness is (depression, cancer, etc) anyone who has it and tries to one up anyone else are just plain annoying. "I've got stage 3 cancer." "Well, I've got stage 4 cancer, it's so much worse. You're so lucky you don't have stage 4 like me." "Well fuck you Bob. I just wanted to let you know not turn this into a pissing contest."
