Why not just get a cat to get rid of the rats o: the dog could seriously get hurt badly

Every time the dog heads toward the rat trap push him away, the stand in front of it like you own it till he backs off, if you need to push him back again. He won't go near it after that.

Put them in a place where they're out of reach of your pets.....

Some pets will keep at it till they get it regardless of where you put . If you "own" the item they'll learn to leave it alone.
