Not true. Mythbusters tested this with James Freaking Cameron himself, and they concluded that had Jack and Rose been clever enough to place their life vests UNDER the door, to add buoyancy, it would've been able to hold them both up above water, and they both would've lived.

Yeah they couldn't have both fit on the board but that didn't mean jack was making a noble sacrifice because rose would have died of hypothermia faster up out of the water after getting soaked in the freezing water rather than swiming in it. I think the myth busters tested this too. So they couldn't they have hung on to the board for extra bouyancy and swam in order to have the best and equal chances of survival?

But putting their life vests under the board would have kept them both up and out of the water, but the hypothermia would kill them both faster then right?

No they would definitely last longer in the air than in the water

I don't know, I think the freezing air and the evaporation (which is an endothermic reaction) of the already freezing water on their cloths and lapping around the board (keeping them wet with the freezing water while evaporating) would draw cause them to loose quite a bit of heat in addition to just the cold of the water.
