Well, sorry to say, but that is their perogative.
I will say though that it is terribly short sighted to establish a "standard" in school that is not a standard in the real world.
My middle school did that. They basically gave every kid a giant I phone that they had access to during 100% of every class period! it cost the school millions and we only ever used it as a notebook.

My classes have 32 iPads and 32 ChromeBooks so there's only one class set of each but we can have both...only iPads is a terrible idea
My school does that too...is it only ipads or is Apple trying to take over the u.s's education systems? (Or maybe other countries? Widely used in Dallas so it could just be where I'm at)
That's something that the media might be interested in knowing.

Seriously. That's actually unsafe. Water can lead to wood rot which will result in a degradation of sturctural integrity leading to the eventual collapse of the roof and possibly injuries or even death. Not to mention mold and the accompanying spores that can cause all sorts of respiratory illnesses and diseases.
Two words: Black Mold.
.
Let a building inspector find that and they, along with the health department (because it's a public building) will shut your shit down within hours.
.
That will be a media circus, the investigations into the school board as to why they spent millions on hand held technology rather than address the leak problem that lead to toxic mold.
we just got new laptops instead for testing. they're pretty awesome.

That idea sucks. there's so much that as a part of school you'll need to be able to do that you won't have the capability for with a tablet. Plus, the amount the school (and by extension, taxpayers) will have to spend as compared to what the students will be allowed to use it for makes it completely ridiculous.
Because so many people get them, thinking "that's what they are supposed to do." Those same people are decision makers in many schools.
.
If you really want to be a jackass about it, raise a stink with the school board for not having it bid out to IT provider companies, showing preferential treatment to a single source provider and supporting the virtual slave labor of their Chinese "employees."

Oh, yeah! People don't like thinking about where their redundant, overpriced tech comes from.
