Oh please, come off of the ivory tower. This world is filled with people who do narcotics, have unprotected sex, and consume alcohol in ridiculous quantities. It's all unhealthy and dangerous, yet no one says word about it because the brainless masses have deemed it to be 'cool'. No one cares if anyone else in unhealthy. Really - who, besides a doctor who has a financial stake in the issue, walks down the street, sees a stranger, and goes, "Wow, I hope the person doesn't have a polyp in their colon.".
It's just another way for losers to think themselves superior, as in, "I'm a 22 year old virgin stoner who lives in my parent's basement and works part time at Wal-Mart, but at least I'm not fat like that guy.".
Uhhh......those things you said are considered either unhealthy or unmoral. And yes obesity is a problem. I don't even really care about the fatness and all that. I'm more worried for the sake of people's health having to suffer by being really out of shape, prone to more diseases and heart attack, self-esteem issues, and probably much more.
It actually DOES affect us financially, as the obese patient's increased need for medical/emergency care drives up insurance rates, and that's not even taking the uninsured into account, who are killing healthcare in this country. In fact, my hospital is doing so poorly because of it (from obese, alcholics, drug addicts, etc) that the only reason I still have a job is because I've avoided round after round of layoffs because I've been there for 12 years.
It sounds like you're trying to excuse the issue based on how poorly we've dealt with other vices, which is a very dangerous way of thinking. Especially when you consider that this is ramping up to be one of the biggest issues of our time.
@Ricepudding: You've been around FS long enough to know that's false. While not popular opinion, there are a handful of people around here who do the whole "you're beautiful" thing even when it isn't appropriate. I've even responded to a few, here and there.

Mg, my point was that there's an important distinction between treating all people with respect regardless of size, and telling children to become obese.
People actually don't to that. If a kid has their weight under control but it's over the average, they tell them to exercise more but not to worry about it. If a kid is obese, unless the parents and the child's physician are idiots, they tell them to seriously watch their weight.
This is insane, do people just enjoy making shit up? We tell kids it's ok to be obese? REALLY? So telling kids they shouldn't hate themselves for being chubby is the same as giving them a free pass to eat themselves to death? NOBODY tells kids that that is ok! But apparently for someone to lose weight they must also feel bad about themselves. You're right we should tell our impressionable children that if they don't lose weight the whole world will think they're disgusting, that'll set them up to be an emotionally stable adult. Forget having your child's pediatrician explain the risks that come with obesity to them and setting up a diet and exercise plan for the kid, and then being supportive and encouraging. It's better to call them fat otherwise people will think you're telling them it's ok to be obese!
I don't think it's a matter that kids are told it's okay. It's mainly, from what I see, that they're told that it doesn't matter if somebody else, or you yourself, are obese- and that you should be proud of your body either way. That is a good moral, but they don't get told how to FIX the problem
I think this is more about the media having more obese "role models". Just like we shouldn't tell kids they need to be skinny, we shouldn't tell them it's okay to be obese either. Loving your body should be about being healthy, not a specific size.
