I pay $1700 annual school tax. Public school is not "free". The "government" pays for them with your money. They have no wealth and generate no wealth, they levy taxes and disburse those funds as they see fit. We used to have a say in those expenditures every November when we went to the ballot box. These days it has become like a mafioso protection scam. We no longer have a say in how much hey take and how it is spent, it us just gone.
I didn't mean free as in I just walk in and get taught and that's the end of it, I meant like my parents have to physically take out $$$ from their pockets (after their salary has been taxed) to pay for my school fees. Private school here is roughly R30k to around R60k a year, public school is about R8k to R15k (for high school I mean, I think primary school is still under R6k)
As much as it sucks for the individual, it's actually not a bad plan irt the country as a whole. A lot of people here can't afford school fees, we'd educate more people if the school fees were paid with tax money instead. But no, our president is too busy using our tax money to build R250m houses to worry about a minor issue like education
