The opening credits and/or first five minutes of any apocalypse movie might look fun, but that is the surest way to get yourself killed. Wait until the echoes of gunfire in the distance die out, the fires stop burning and the smoke at least starts to clear, then venture out. Don't add to the body count, be a survivor.

Unless of course, something near where you live could be considered "tactically signifigant." If that's the case, you're going to want to evacuate as soon as possible. You don't want to be around for whatever might take place there.
Depends on the subgenre. The classic Romero Somnambulist zombies can persist for ten or more years and reanimate after being frozen, making arctic regions even more dangerous.
