It's sometimes just safer to stand back and wait. Most of the time, the snake is just trying to escape and if it moves the cat will actually chase it. My three-legged cat, Tom, would find snakes (I mean search for snakes that had no intention of getting anywhere near him) and attack them. I would have to wait until the snake made a run for it before I could pick up Tom, stopping him from giving chase. Cats are pretty tough, although I completely understand your concern. That REALLY looks unsafe.
