One reason the Gravity budget was so high is that many of the VFX were new... that is to say, specifically invented to shoot the movie. They were often made up as they went to over come various technological obstacles.
.
I understand the point of bringing attention to the apparent disparity of the budgets in question, but in the case of Gravity, I give it a pass. It was the best and the most scientificly literate movie I have seen in a very long time. Even James Cameron said it was the best science fiction space film he had ever seen. High praise coming from a director of his caliber.
.
If you want to call attention to budget disparity... and more importantly the disparity of investment of time and emotion in a subject, compare investment in NASA or any other national space program to American Football.
You cannot compare something 97%privately funded with something 99% publicly funded (NFL v NASA). If you want to try comparisons along this route try this, for her role in gravity Sandra Bullock was paid $15,000,000 plus 15% of the movie's gross, totaling over $40,000,000 for 1 movie. George Clooney made $46,000,000 in 2013 (while publicly condemning private industry for income inequality). The average salary paid to an NFL player is $1,900,000 annually. The average salary paid to NASA engineers is $90,000 annually. Clearly NASA would be insolvent in months if they tried keeping pace with the pay scale of Hollywood superstars.
Gravity's Income: $716.4 million in box office sales world wide.
Indian Mars mission's Income: $0
Ya you are right, I have no idea why anybody would think to spend so much on a movie......................................................
