I think because it's the second most common (lung is first) type of cancer killing women and having a month to raise awareness helps remind women to get annual mammograms and early detection could save a life.
Well, approximatelly half of humanity has boobs while the other half is wildly obsessed with them. Kinda makes them quite important so I think it's safe to assume it's in everybody's best interest to raise awareness and thus reduce the number of mastectomies.
Joke aside, I believe the whole year should be something-awareness. In fact, why not educate people more on the health subject? We could start in schools, teaching kids more about the health-related things than about integrals and sinusiodal function. Sure, both is useful but as I've found, maths tends to cause strokes while knowledge and awareness help prevent them so yeah, feel free to teach the kids whatever you think is more important.
The overwhelming majority of money donated to breast cancer doesn't even go to research and funding. It goes to advertising and payroll and things like that.
