If I remember my random facts correctly, it's actually traditional for Japanese tables to be low to the floor, with people sitting cross-legged on cushions on the floor.

I don't think the inset floor is normal. The tables are just supposed to be short.

Depends where you are. This is the traditional way. You have to take of your shoes before going in the wood too. It is also considered impolite to not sit cross-legged
