I read a book about him in eighth grade, he really is a hero. His arm was so cramped that his wife stayed up all night every night massaging it for him.

This guy is awesome, but you shouldn't attribute his actions to his country. During that same war, the japanese killed more Chinese than Hitler had killed Jews in the holocaust. I'm not saying that Japan is bad, but I still think you should see this as Mr.Sugihara's action, not Japan's.

His 'superiors' (don't like using that word in this context) were NOT pleased. It ended his career and he was vilified for years.

Yeah, people tend to do stuff like that. Also, 'superiors' is fine. It's all about the intent behind the word.
