Hate crimes were first created to do battle with the KKK. It's not the idea that killing a black person is a hate crime, but killing a black (or gay or Asian or any other minority) person because of their minority status.
Today's KKK is a more politically correct form of its predecessor, in the sense they aren't killing anyone, but they're still one of the most racist groups in the US. They're very anti-color, anti-semetic, and anti-catholic.
"and instead, we should all be treated the same, with the same laws and the same punishments for the same crimes."
so does that include racist cops? does that include rich Americans? you all agree with this because you haven't been in a state of minority, where you have been enforced of these laws - not because you did something bad but because your black/gay/poor/whatever. they say not to label all crimes involving colour as hate crimes, but that doesn't mean crimes solely based on colours should be accepted as regular crime.

Why should a cop beating someone for no reason be treated any differently then a cop beating someone because of race? We SHOULD all be treated the same with the same laws and the same punishments for the same crimes. That is the equality we have spent years and years striving for.
It's true but at the same time, making hate crimes punishments harsher sends a message. But then there's also cops whose deaths carry way harsher punishments, than a "regular" sentence. Summary, everything unfair.
