Novelization explains it, sorta. The two were so used to sparring during training that they instinctively blocked for what they assumed the other's attack would be, based on previous fights.

None of them are useless, Star Wars is Star Wars, and it's all awesome. At least as far as the movies and most of the Expanded Universe is concerned.
