Both are privileges.
We also have the right to both.
People aren't given weapons paid for by tax dollars. If you want to compare them, than either both are payed for, or neither of them are.
Find a better example. Preferably one that isn't so controversial, because about half of the U.S. (I'm assuming that's the society you're trying to criticise) disagrees with you.
How about having children....I have seen MANY cases that shouldn't be a right. I can tell ya owning guns and having a concealed carry permit, thought it should be a right in the US, it's much closer to a privilege.
Privilege: a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people.
.
Right: a moral or legal entitlement to have or obtain something or to act in a certain way.
It's a right because our founding fathers recognized that governments can become tyrannical and it's up to the armed citizens to prevent that from happening. The second amendment is what guarantees all the other ones.
having a gun should definitely only be a privilege. I know it's a form of self defence, but it's just as easily a form of attack (as we see on the news ALL THE TIME) and even as self defence- if you have a gun in your possession, in the heat of the moment are you really going to consider anything else? It's a power you should only be permitted if you can be trusted to be smart with it, not just use it without thinking.
A knife can be used to attack, the household chemicals you buy can be used to attack. Responsible and sensible people shouldn't have freedoms abolished because of deranged psychopaths. People get drunk without thinking all the time, maybe we should abolish that too. Worked out well before. You should brush up on your history and read what the founder's said about your ignorent philosophy.
I'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed guns. I'm saying there should be more careful and strict processes put in place in order to prevent those 'deranged psychopaths' from having access to guns.
There are many processes and safeguards already,
but people can't prevent thievery, and many cartels and mafias will gladly sell guns to anyone. For cheap.
The only way to combat the criminals, is to stop them when they show intent to harm an innocent, or contribute to such an act.
The best way to do that, is to let men and women willing to bear that responsibility do so freely and without unjust persecution.
hmm, fair enough I guess. Just hearing about all the shootings on the news and the fact that y country doesn't allow guns- guess I just find it hard to imagine
We aren't the greatest, or the nicest, nor are we the most civilized, but people need to remember that we aren't the worst. That we are huge and diverse and usually try to do the right thing.
Simply put, a lot of us don't want to be nice and civil.
Civility has caused just as much pain as barbarianism.
We also have the right to both.
