... where does one place the bottom part of his or her blender? and how the heck is it apart from the top half

The top part is usually all plastic and gets a lot of food bits on it, so it's detachable for cleaning or even dishwashering. The bottom part has a metal blade that doesn't need to be cleaned as often and is harder to clean, so the two often aren't connected. They get separated when you take the top off to clean.
