Well that's because things shown in cutaways aren't meant to be taken seriously as part of the actual story (this was a cutaway).

This actually seems fairly plausible. Baby skulls are actually rather pliable, because they're not fully formed. It's like a bunch of pieces of skull floating on top of the brain juice.
