I have my bed and two mattresses (is that the plural form?^^) just so that I could invite friends over anytime. Also I use it the two mattresses as my reading corner :)
It's mostly there as a failsafe should one kidney fail. However it is true that kidney performance in your body is much better when both are functional.
It's quite rare for only one kidney to fail, usually in chronic or acute kidney degeneration both go out of function so it's really not just a spare one and the one that does all the work, they both work together. One kidney would fail in cases of some acute inflammation, particularly retrograde inflammation coming from the ureters.
Mine failed to form. My mom says that the kidney I do have is a bit larger than normal. She is a nurse so I want to believe her but I have my doubts. I'm not one for anatomy though.
Then you probably have some sort of renal hypoplasia or aplasia if you were born with a bigger kidney and a non-functional one. I'm happy to know you're okay though. Prooves our bodies are really fascinating for being able to compensate all kinds of things.
I really really hope that day never comes. Your body could very well learn how to live with just one, specially if you try to live as healthy as possible.
