I also see Sam as more of a hero than Frodo because Sam sticks with Frodo even though things get tough. Frodo was bound to the quest (see the departing from Rivendell) but Sam was only bound by friendship.
Well, perhaps in that series (though losing Haldir was awful).
In Hobbit I'd have to say losing Thranduil's War-Elk, because that was not in the books and I was therefore unprepared to deal with it.

Well, technically it WAS, but you didn't read about it. You may already know this, but everything in the Hobbit movies was in J.R.R. Tolkien's original manuscript for the book. Credit to a user that I can remember for teaching this to me.
