I had a golden as a kid. One time he got out and stole every morning newspaper in the neighborhood and put them on our doorstep. My dad and I had to deliver at least 50 papers that morning....best dog ever.

Are they called golden retrievers because they retrieve things?

Yes. They are bred specifically to retrieve birds and stuff for hunters. They have an instinct to bring something to you. They also are bred to have a very soft bite so they don't damage what they are retrieving. That would be why my dog often comes crying with some food in her mouth that she can't figure out how to chew. She's really bad with hot dogs. It's really pathetic and funny.
