The founder and CEO, Nancy Brinker, was/is also a politician. That might be where some of her $530,000 a year salary comes from. It's not $640,000 by the way.
But he does pay for his own food. "Official" state dinners are covered, but meals for himself and his family are expensed to him. There's a few other things that he has to pay for, but I don't recall what they are.

The long and the short of it is that being the President isn't quite the free ride everyone thinks it is.
