It was part of the culture. Also, it had chili flakes and was mostly cacao, so it wouldn't have been pleasant.

Spicy hot chocolate doesn't sound so bad. Then again, I'm indian, so 80% of what eat can set your intestines on fire.

Spicy hot chocolate is fine; bitter, lukewarm, unsweetened Aztec-style coco seems like it would take a bit to get used to.

Chocolate back then had no sugar in it and was in the form of extremely bitter liquid. It wouldn't have tasted good at all.
