What is happening with the language?

when I was a kid I was in and out of therapy, the kind where they talk to your parents for 45 minutes, question you for ten and then prescribe you god only knows what behaviour-altering substances, on your first visit. I remember counting this one guy saying "sort of" 72 times in a 60 minute session. Didn't inspire much confidence!
