actually no, you're thinking of a supanova, this happened in the upper atmosphere, the friction of entering the atmosphere causes the meteor to super heat and explode, seen it myself only once by just glancing up at the right moment

Just a slight correction. A meteor is the trail of light a meteorOID gives off as it enters the atmosphere, not the actual rock.
