Honey, it says right there in the comic that the hat was ugly. Saying that it's actually lovely is lying. My point is, false compliments aren't really something we should be awfully proud of giving. Sure, it's nice to say a white lie in order to try cheering up someone but it might be even better to simply smile at them or say something more honest. Obviously false compliments aren't my thing, that's all.
There are different kinds of lie. We have a saying: Don't say anything but the truth, but you don't have to say all the truths. Sometimes we don't need to offend people by telling the truth. A compliment (a lie in your opinion) is a social thing we do to make others happy and it's free of charge
It can be hurtful in the long run to give false compliments as people may think everything is fine and then find out it's really not. He could have been going to an interview or a date, which ends poorly because of this man. I'm not saying you should say it looks awful, but there are other things about him that you can look to compliment that you don't find negative.
It was a lie, because the man said the hat looked ugly. Because the man found it ugly, it was a lie to say it was awesome. It says it right there in the comic. You don't have to lie to give a compliment, you don't have to lie to make people feel good.
@asteroid "A compliment (a lie in your opinion) is a social thing we do to make others happy and it's free of charge" A compliment does not equal a lie in my opinion. A false compliment, though, is a lie. Learn to differentiate.
@ missraven, bless you, can I just sign under your post since I completely agree with it?
Sorry I meant this particular case of a compliment. And the saying is a good thing if we can abide by that. Don't say anything but the truth, but you don't have to say all the truths. You do not need to tell everybody you see the truth. The fact that false compliments make people unaware of reality is true about close friends. But the comic is about strangers and it is a good gesture anyways. He sure has a lot of people in his life to tell him the hat is ridiculous if they thought so. Strangers do not need to do that.
I've had wayy too many people give me false compliments and more often than not they actually lead to me wondering when people are actually telling me the truth, which means even when people give me completely honest compliments, I often don't take them seriously... False compliments just boost people's ego and give them a false sense of self-worth, where ACTUAL compliments can let people know where they're good and to keep doing that!
Ok that's fair. I agree with you then. But hearing a bad thing about yourself even from your best friend or your partner hurts like ..... I like the compliments and I actually do not need people to tell me the truth because I know the truth and I know it completely.
Yeah, it does hurt, but the fact is we can't always just let people go on ignoring their flaws. If there's something that isn't good, sometimes they need to change, and getting 100000 compliments about the thing is going to make it impossible for them to see that it's not okay, even if everything they draw looks like dicks or they're leaning towards obesity. I don't care when I'm insulted by strangers because I'm just like "fuck you mate" but it does hurt from friends and family, and it's not fun, but we can't just ignore the fact that we're not perfect and we have to acknowledge our flaws and work to change them.
Ok so the conclusion is this: friends and family can tell us our flaws on the condition that it is not an obvious one. But I completely see your point. tnx
