Hmm.. Something, Something Modern PC vs historical accuracy...something, something. There were lotsa black males named that during Samuel Clemens life.

Well, it's true that in Tom Sawyer there are almost no black people, and the only non-white person is an evil character (I mean Injun Joe, and yeah, he is partly white, but in the book it's described that he's evil because of his Native American blood). Twain was probably racist, but considering when and where he lived, it wouldn't be such a surprise.
