Gametes fuse in to a zygote, but it's all microscopic. From fertilization, you get a bunch of cell divisions as the zygote implants into the uterine wall. A few days later, the cells start differentiating and form a blastocyst, which is still microscopic. After a lot of cellular multiplying and more differentiation, the blastocyst becomes an embryo.
