It looks like the helmet skid fast and far, not was sliced. So no, I don't think he would have missed the ground...

I know that wearing a helmet (on a bicycle) has saved me from either really serious head injuries, or possibly death. Always wear your helmet even if it's only a bike/moped/dirtbike etc..

Headfirst collision with a big jagged rock jumping over the bike from probably 8-10 feet was my helmet-advertising experience. I always wear one. Always use protection, kids!
