However true it may be, grades are usually determined by how well you can memorise information (maths and physics being one of the few where you learn concepts and how to use them in different situations instead). So I wouldn't say it measures intelligence. I think we should be graded on our ability to practically use the information we memorise.
Intelligence is not (only) about knowledge. A person can be "literate" but not "intelligent" at the same time, or intelligent without knowing much. Both is possible. There are people with good grades which I would not consider as clever, they're just fine with being submissive to authority and memorising stuff. Grades are not measures of intelligence, they're measuring certain skills.
Besides stupidity there are many different reasons for being bad at school.
Guest is so right, many people have a scholar intelligence, but it doesn't mean they do well in life, while for others it's just the contrary, they just have to find what they like to do.

Intelligence is being able to understand, and to learn
Knowledge is being able to memorize
High intelligence leads to high knowledge, but intelligence is not required.
You can easily pass school with flying colors without actually having a large amount of intelligence. You can also be extremely intelligent, but because of that, you choose not to blindly follow instructions (Which may or may not be a good choice, depending on the circumstances) and so may get you bad grades because of your submission. Grades are not in any way a good measure of intelligence. Most IQ tests, I've noticed, are just knowledge tests. Intelligence is figuring things out when you don't know anything. Knowledge is remembering the solution and then carrying it out.
