The sad part? $30k is really freaking cheap. Don't even want to think about the cost if the kid is in NICU for a while

My first daughter was born at almost 28 weeks (3 months early) and spent 101 days in the NICU and it came out to about half a million. That included a three week bed rest in the hospital before she was born. Thankfully it was completely covered by our insurance. But holy crap that was crazy.
Well in Germany you need to have health insurance. You pay for it every month but when you're having a baby you don't really have to pay a lot. A little for the room I think, but that also depends on how long you're staying in the hospital after you gave birth. We also have a really low birth rate and the government is desperate to raise it. If we had to pay 30,000 $ for giving birth no one in their right mind would have a child.
Healthcare. In Canada part of our income tax covers off healthcare. But in essence, compared to the States it's free. What we pay in income tax and taxes on our merchandise is less than what my cousins pay in Arizona and California. But we have healthcare in that too
Oh but we pay a lot for health care. And by a lot I mean ALOT. that's why Obama tried to start obamacare because it's too expensive to have for most people

Except the annoying thing is now it's more expensive because every plan has to cover everything and if I can't afford to buy insurance I have to pay a fine for not having it. They do have some state sponsored plans but I'm too rich for that, even though we don't make much.
It's free if you do it at home and the midwife accepts chickens that you hatched from eggs.

A lot of my friends have done home birth and it is much cheaper and they say it's more relaxing. I have medical issues so I've had to use the hospital. If you save up and don't have insurance, some hospitals will charge less if you pay in advance.
As me being Canadian, I remember the day I learned about the costs of childbirth in the US. I remember how surprised I was. Think about it this way: You are paying for your children.

You're paying for the space in the hospital, the drugs, the doctors and nurses taking care of you, whatever for you eat there, etc etc.
This is the land that boasts freedom and so proud of itself it conjured up a notion where it has the power to invade other countries simply because it does not like the way they live. Sweet, sweet ignorance.
