It's a punishment designed to teach them that misbehaving will not get them what they want. It does not harm the child in any way, so how is it cruel?

I agree with sora - if you don´t punish him now, he might think that this behaviour is good (doesn´t matter what he has done, but it was probably something bad, because he is punsihed) and get used to it... So in conclusion he might for example think that it´s right to judge people only because of their look or that it´s okay to beat animals...
