I bet this is gonna get downvoted, but he literally could have just said "no." Or maybe he could have said "we don't have the money." Everything isn't about hiding every last negative thing on the planet from your child.

Having to say "no" everyday is harder on the parent than the child.

It also teaches the child that they don't need everything they want in life and generally creates a less spoiled child, imho. I understand that their father avoided it all together, but I feel my point still holds weight
