We think of deserts as only being extremely hot but actually they're places of extreme hot and extreme cold. They can get very very cold at nights and very very hot in the day, but snow isn't common.

And 9 months later, I was born...

And yet southern california (my lifelong home) has apparently never had snow, or at least not in my lifetime

Wow. It snows in the desert, but it doesn't snow in California? I can't make sense of this...
